Choral music forms a central part of and pivotal role in the worship at Sheffield Cathedral, with around 40 boys, girls and men singing regular services, as well as performing for a wide variety of special occasions in the Cathedral and beyond.

In addition to providing rich and plentiful music for the Cathedral’s liturgy, membership of the choir offers an unparalleled experience and education for the young people involved.

Hear The Choir

The Cathedral Choir sings at the Sung Eucharist on Sunday at 10.30am, at evensong on Sunday at 4.00pm, and at evensong from Tuesday to Friday at 5:45pm.

About The Choir

In addition to the Cathedral services, the choir broadcasts on radio and television, tours in the UK and abroad (including the USA, Holland, Germany, France, Hungary and the Czech Republic), and makes CD recordings which have received high critical acclaim in the music press.

The Cathedral is often a centre for workshops and singing days given by distinguished visiting musicians, including Sir David Willcocks, John Rutter, Scott Stroman, Ralph Allwood and Ben Parry.

There is no special school for the choristers - they attend various schools all over Sheffield. Boys usually join the choir when they are around 7 years old, with girls joining when they are around 10. During their time in the choir, choristers receive free individual singing lessons and music theory lessons.

It’s a big commitment, but I really enjoy it and everyone finds it very rewarding.

At an audition, potential choristers will need to demonstrate their musical and aural alertness. The Director of Music is happy to hear from interested parents at any time.

The life of a chorister is rich and varied, singing at many and varied services during the year, together with tours, concerts and social events. All in all, it adds up to a busy, exciting and stimulating experience!

The tours are great - I’ll remember them for the rest of my life.
